Fall and Winter mean's storms and as a result-power outages in Warren & Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Customers frequently call and ask about portable generator inlets for their home, allowing them to safely plug in a portable generator and run the essentials in their home. These are not automatic solutions like whole-home stand-by generators but can be a good alternative. These will allow you to run things like your well pump and refrigerators/freezers

There are essentially two ways to do it properly:

Main Breaker Interlock

Pro's

Allows you to pick and choose what to run on generator (within reason)

No extra splicing in panel

Con's

Not all panels have listed interlocks available

Requires space for generator breaker

Requires you to turn off all unwanted breakers, shed load manually

Manual Transfer Switch

Pro's

Switch loads from utility to generator in one flick of a switch

Requires no spare breaker spaces

Gives you watt meters to monitor how much power you are using

Con's

Can't readily change what is connected to generator power

Requires splicing in panels

Can be harder to do if panel is flush in wall/ finished area
